Wheelchairs and scooters — yes, we rent them

A visit, a few weeks after surgery, a conference or a theme park, or while your own machine is in for repair. We rent three kinds of equipment:

• Manual wheelchairs — folding chairs that go in the trunk of almost any car.
• Power wheelchairs — for longer stays and for anyone who cannot self-propel.
• Mobility scooters — the usual choice for getting around outside for a week or two.

Rentals are private pay. Insurance does not generally cover a short-term chair or scooter — and if a letter has told you your chair is a “rental”, that is a different thing entirely. See below.

“My insurance says my chair is a rental”

When Medicare or an insurer supplies a power wheelchair, it is usually billed as a capped rental: the plan pays monthly for thirteen months, and at the end of the thirteenth month the chair converts to yours. You keep it. Nobody collects it.

So if a letter calls your chair a rental, you are not looking for a rental company — you are part-way through a purchase. Nothing needs doing.

If a chair still inside that thirteen months needs work, go back to the supplier who billed it. While the capped rental is running they are the ones responsible for keeping it going, and the service is covered — taking it elsewhere usually means paying for something the plan owes you anyway.

Once it converts to yours at the thirteenth month it is a chair like any other, and repair and service is an ordinary conversation to have with us.
